Support of the Development of CDM-/JI-Projects (I):
For operators, that fall under the EU-directive on emissions trading,
both CDM- as well as JI-projects according to the Kyoto Protocol
constitute a cost-effective alternative to abatement measures in their
own facilities. For host countries and project developers these
projects offer an additional stream of income in hard currencies to
finance modern technologies and sustainable development paths.
In
both project types companies from industrialised countries (or their
governments) invest into abatement projects either in other industrialised
countries
(JI - Joint Implementation) or developing countries (CDM - Clean
Development Mechanism). For every ton of carbon emissions avoided by the
projects investors generate emission credits.
These are calculated as difference of the baseline and the actual emissions
of the projects.
In the case of JI-projects the generated emissions credits are
called ERU
(Emission Reduction Units). According to article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol
ERU can be obtained beginning in the year 2008. In the case of CDM-projects
credits are named
CER (Certified Emission Reductions). According to article 12 of the
Kyoto Protocol these can be generated since the year 2000.
